See ya on the slopes of Canaan Valley!

Winter is the perfect time of year to escape to the mountains of West Virginia.

Less than a 3-hour drive from Baltimore/Washington and Pittsburgh, PA, a modest town of just over 600 residents boasts an unexpected mecca for winter sports. Often referred to by name in combination with its sister town just down the road, “Thomas-Davis” is a quaint spot for eats, drinks, local artists and live music.

Often blanketed with an average snowfall of over 160 inches, the respite of Tucker County becomes a winter wonderland from mid-December through March each year.

Enjoy the combination of mountains and abundant snow at one of two ski resorts located within 5 miles of each other. Canaan Valley Ski Resort and family-owned Timberline Four Seasons Resort offer a combined 76 trails for downhill skiing or snowboarding. Both resorts offer beginner education programs as well as advanced terrain.

If a day on the West Virginia downhill slopes isn’t enough, tackle the nation’s top cross country ski area, White Grass Ski Touring Center. Named number 1 by USA Today in 2017, there are 25-30km of trails to glide and slide on Nordic skis. Also, a guided high-country hike or snowshoes are available until dark daily.

For the more mild adventurer or for the family, the Blackwater Falls Sledding Hill is a great time for all ages. The sled run is over a quarter mile long (one of the longest in the nation!) with a magic carpet conveyor to take riders back to the top of the hill on the provided sled. The snack shack with hot chocolate and fire pit is the perfect end to the night.
